Constellation Craft

Whether you’re trying to entertain dozens of toddlers at a celestial-themed birthday party, stimulate a lazy afternoon, or entertain kiddos for a late night like New Year’s Eve, this craft is educational, artistic, and yummy!!!  It can also be modified for just about any age and stage.  For instance, when catering to a large group, I provided individually packaged snacks so parents didn’t feel the need to police their child’s intake and everyone could participate fairly (here is a printable for the sign I used).

What I Used:

(1)  Determine what constellations you’d like to use.  For my daughter’s birthday, we used her astrological sign as well as some more basic patterns (Cassiopeia, Orion’s Belt, Ursa Major, etc) because we were catering to a variety of different ages.  When it was a single parent-child project, I chose signs that had more of a story behind them and that were currently in the sky to continue the conversation beyond our simple craft.  Truly, the sky is the limit!

(2)  Using your pen, trace the lines where your pretzels were and add stars in the gaps.  Please note that your version of the constellation does not need to be as intricate as the actual constellation (Orion is comprised of SEVERAL more stars and detailed lines that weren’t going to fit onto the page).

(3)  Let your kiddo loose with pretzels and marshmallows to recreate the traced designs (if your kid is like mine and would eat an absurd amount of these snacks, I’d recommend providing a pre-determined amount as opposed to letting them loose with open bags)!  You can also encourage to make their own and develop a “mythology” around their constellation.

(4)  Eat your handiwork!!!
